What is Pizhichil?

Pizhichil Ayurvedic treatment is a traditional ayurvedic  procedure from Kerala, where a combination of medicated oil and steam therapy is involved.

Although the term “Pizhichil” (meaning “squeezing”) is regional, its method is traditionally described in Ayurvedic texts as Sarvangadhara, where warm herbal oil is poured in a continuous stream over the body. Pizhichil is a Purva Karma procedure in Panchakarma, combining Snehana, which involves the application of medicated oils, and Swedana (sudation) in a deeply rejuvenating therapy.

Ayurvedic Perspective on Pizhichil

Pizhichil therapy in Ayurveda is also known as Kayaseka. It includes an oil treatment in which warm, medicated herbal oils are gently poured over the entire body in a continuous stream. This therapy allows the oil to go deep into the skin and tissues, helping the body relax from within.

It mainly works to calm Vata dosha, which, when disturbed, can cause dryness, body stiffness, joint pain, weakness, and nerve problems. At the same time, the warmth of the oil also helps cool and balance Pitta, reducing irritation and inflammation in the body.

Pizhichil is commonly advised for people suffering from arthritis, joint pain, back pain, paralysis, nerve weakness, neuropathy, and rheumatic disorders. The therapy is usually done by two to four trained therapists who gently rub the body while pouring warm oil from a fixed height for a specific span of time.

This treatment is carried out for several days, and post-treatment, a warm bath is done to remove toxins and improve circulation. Pizhichil therapy, along with treating the illness, is also considered a rejuvenation therapy as it improves skin quality, delays ageing, boosts immunity, and leaves the body feeling light, strong, and deeply relaxed.

Scientific Mechanism & Clinical Evidence
  1. Thermal & Mechanical Stimulation

Pizhichil uses warm, medicated oil and gentle rubbing over the body. The warmth helps loosen tight muscles and stiff joints, while the heat improves blood circulation so that more oxygen and nutrients can reach the tissues. Gentle massage pressure activates the body’s nerves and helps remove waste products and toxins. As a result, there is less stiffness, reduced pain, and better overall body movement.

  1. Herbal Oils Absorb Deeply Through the Skin (Transdermal Absorption)

The oils used in Pizhichil are mixed with Ayurvedic herbs. These herbal compounds are oil-based, which allows them to easily penetrate the skin. The warmth of the oil opens skin pores, helping the herbs reach deeper tissues and even enter the bloodstream. Scientific studies have found herbal compounds in the blood after Pizhichil therapy. As a result, it supports internal healing, strengthens nerves, and improves overall tissue nourishment.

  1. Reduces Inflammation & Body Stress

Research indicates that Pizhichil may help reduce levels of inflammatory chemicals in the body. It also lowers oxidative stress, which is linked to ageing and chronic pain. This makes it helpful for long-term conditions such as arthritis, joint swelling, and nerve pain. As a result, patients may experience less swelling, calmer nerves, and long-lasting relief.

Pizhichil Procedure

During the Pizhichil procedure, warm, medicated oil or milk is poured over the body using a special cotton cloth, while a gentle rub down is given simultaneously. During this procedure, the body’s channels or srotas open up, thereby loosening deep-seated toxins and enhancing circulation and tissue nourishment. The therapy is profoundly comforting, detoxifying, and refreshing, making it one of the most luxurious and effective Ayurvedic treatments available.

Indications for Pizhichil

Pizhichil treatment is recommended for a wide range of health conditions, particularly those involving Vata disorders. It is commonly used in the Ayurvedic treatment of:

  • Paralysis (Pakshaghat)
  • Neurological disorders (e.g., facial palsy, sciatica, hemiplegia)
  • Muscle cramps and stiffness
  • Arthritis and joint pain (Sandhigata Vata, Amavata)
