Looking For A Natural Way To Manage Weight?
Udwarthanam is a classical Ruksha Udvartana therapy, deeply rooted in the Ayurvedic tradition of Shodhana (detoxification) and Kapha-vata hara chikitsa. This therapy utilizes finely milled herbal powders—either dry (shushka) or mixed with medicated taila—applied in vigorous, upward strokes to stimulate agni, enhance rasa-rakta circulation, and eliminate ama (metabolic toxins) accumulated in the dhatus.
This treatment is particularly effective in conditions involving kapha dushti such as medoroga (obesity), kaphaja kustha (skin disorders), stambha (muscular stiffness), and gaurava (heaviness in the body). The friction generated during Udwarthanam helps liquefy excess kapha, mobilize stagnant doshas, and open up srotas (body channels), thereby facilitating the elimination of waste through swedavaha srotas (sweat channels).
Udvartana (also called Udvartanam or Ayurvedic powder massage) is a traditional Ayurvedic external therapy described in classical texts such as Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, and Ashtanga Hridaya as an important part of Dinacharya (daily regimen) and Panchakarma-related procedures. Its name derives from the Sanskrit root meaning “to rub upward,” emphasizing brisk friction against the direction of hair growth across the body.
Udvartana, on certain occasions, uses herbal powders, sometimes mixed with warm medicated oil, and these are rubbed on the body. This rubbing helps reduce extra body fat, removes heaviness, and keeps the body healthy and fresh. It is especially helpful for people who feel lazy, heavy, or who gain weight easily. Udvartana also helps improve the feel and smoothness of the skin.
There are two main types of Udvartana:
Classical Ayurvedic texts attribute a range of therapeutic effects to Udvartana — it alleviates heaviness, body odor, itching, and other Kapha-related symptoms; improves twak prasadana (skin complexion and quality); stimulates superficial metabolic activity by opening bodily channels (srotas) and facilitating the breakdown and mobilization of Meda (fat).
Doing this therapy regularly helps control extra body weight and keeps the body healthy. It improves blood flow, makes the body feel lighter and stronger, and helps prevent problems linked to poor digestion and weight gain.
Udvartana primarily works by rubbing herbal powders firmly into the skin. This rubbing helps blood flow more freely throughout the body, removes excess fluids, and helps break down excess fat under the skin. This stimulation may also activate skin-associated metabolic pathways, helping to reduce adiposity and improve skin condition.
Clinical and observational evidence cited in the 2024 IJHSR review suggests that Udvartana has Kaphahara (Kapha-reducing) and Medohara (fat-metabolising) properties, and studies have reported statistically significant reductions in physical parameters — such as body weight, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, hip circumference, waist–hip ratio, and skin-fold thickness — as well as improvements in lipid profiles.
These results show that Udvartana may help reduce problems such as excess body weight and unhealthy blood fats. This supports its traditional use in maintaining the body’s health and preventing lifestyle-related health problems.

Udwarthanam is a traditional Ayurvedic therapy that involves a vigorous massage using herbal powders. Unlike oil massages, this treatment is dry and performed in an upward stroking motion. The friction created helps stimulate fat metabolism, exfoliate dead skin cells, and promote detoxification by enhancing lymphatic drainage and improving circulation.
Udwarthanam offers multiple benefits, including:

Always consult an Ayurvedic doctor to ensure the treatment is suitable for your body type and condition.
The frequency depends on your health goals. For weight management or fat reduction, Udwarthanam may be advised daily or on alternate days for 7 to 21 sessions. For general detox, once or twice a week is sufficient. A full course is usually tailored after consultation with an Ayurvedic expert, based on Dosha, lifestyle, and specific conditions.
