What does Kadikizhi mean?

Kadikizhi is a strong Ayurvedic treatment that involves rubbing the whole body with heated muslin bundles packed with herbal powders, pulses, seeds, or leaves. These bundles, which are called ‘kizhi’, are steamed with herbal starch and then utilised for skilled work.

At Mirasa Ayurveda, the Kadikizhi therapy can help in managing diabetes and other illnesses, as well as treating body aches, joint pain, stiffness, and problems associated with being overweight. The dry heat from the bundles helps to bring Vata and Kapha doshas back into equilibrium.

Ayurvedic Perspective on Kadikizhi

Ayurveda says that most physical pain, stiffness, and heaviness are caused by an imbalance in the Vata and Kapha doshas. This causes bad blood flow and a buildup of toxins (ama) in the body. Kadikizhi works by using heat and herbs to

* Make things less rigid and heavy.

* Get rid of pollutants in the body

* Make blood flow better

* Take away pain and swelling

The treatment helps clear blocked channels and restore equilibrium, which makes the body feel lighter and more flexible.

Scientific Mechanism & Clinical Evidence

Kadikizhi, also called a ‘herbal powder bolus body rub works by using heat, pressure, and the absorption of herbal actives through the skin. The treatment consists of putting warm herbal bundles on the body, which has both physical and chemical benefits.

Thermotherapy (Action of Heat)

The herbal boluses’ warmth raises the temperature in the area, which causes vasodilation (the widening of blood vessels). This makes blood flow better, gives tissues more oxygen, and helps get rid of waste products from metabolism. Heat also helps relax muscular fibers, which eases muscle spasms and stiffness.

Stimulation through mechanics

The rhythmic rubbing and pushing motion makes mechanoreceptors in the skin and deeper tissues work. This helps lessen pain by using the gate control theory, which says that non-painful stimuli stop pain impulses from getting to the brain. It also helps the lymphatic system drain better, which reduces swelling and irritation.

Transdermal Drug Delivery

The herbal powders in Kadikizhi have bioactive chemicals that help reduce inflammation, pain, and free radicals. Heat and massage make the skin more permeable, which makes it easier for these substances to go into the tissues below.

Anti-inflammatory Action

Turmeric, ginger, and castor-based formulations are just a few of the many herbs that can help lower inflammatory mediators like prostaglandins and cytokines. This can help ease pain and swelling in the joints and muscles.
