Netra Tarpan is an ancient Ayurvedic therapy, lovingly prepared to bring relief and revitalize tired & strained eyes.
Today, with endless screen time, pollution, and restless nights, our eyes silently bear the weight of fatigue, dryness, and stress. This soulful therapy—where warm, medicated ghee lovingly bathes the eyes—feels like a tender embrace, calming delicate tissues, restoring lost energy, and soothing the quiet discomfort hidden within.
More than just a treatment, Netra Tarpana is a ritual of self-care—a sacred pause for your eyes to rest, breathe, and rediscover their natural glow. It eases dryness, strain, and dark circles and even slows the signs of early degeneration. Beyond clearer vision, it leaves your eyes feeling light, cherished, and deeply nourished—ready once again to see the world with clarity and joy.
Ayurvedic Perspective on Netra Tarpana, also called Akshi Tarpana or Netra Basti, is a Brimhana (nourishing) and Snigdha (unctuous) Kriyakalpa therapy described under Netra Roga Chikitsa. The term “Tarpana” literally means “to nourish or satiate,” and in this procedure, medicated ghee is retained over the eyes to deeply nourish ocular tissues.
Ayurveda considers the eyes as a seat of Alochaka Pitta (responsible for transforming and transferring the information of visual perception to the intellect), supported by balanced Vata and Kapha. When Vata gets imbalanced or aggravated due to aging, excessive screen use, stress, or degeneration, it leads to dryness, fatigue, blurred vision, and degenerative eye disorders.
Netra Tarpana, an ayurvedic panchakarma treatment, tries to nullify the aggravated Vata. The therapy pacifies the Vata & stabilizes the Pitta and restores ocular lubrication. Classical texts recommend this therapy for both preventive eye care and conditions such as Timira (refractive errors), Shushka Akshipaka (dry eye), Abhishyanda, degenerative retinal conditions, and eye strain. Thus, Netra Tarpana is viewed as a rejuvenative (Rasayana-like) ocular therapy that strengthens vision, ocular muscles, and surrounding tissues
The therapeutic action of Netra Tarpana can be explained through prolonged ocular contact, lubrication, and local drug bioavailability. During Netra Tarpana, warm medicated ghee gently covers the surface of the eyes and serves as a natural protective layer. This helps prevent dryness by slowing moisture evaporation and keeps the eyes well lubricated. The warmth and oily nature of the ghee allow the herbal ingredients to slowly reach the deeper tissues of the eyes, providing long-lasting relief. Various clinical studies have shown that Netra Tarpana is helpful in common eye problems such as dry eyes, computer-related eye strain, weak eyesight, glaucoma, and age-related eye disorders.
Post-treatment, people often experience relief from burning sensations, dryness, irritation, blurred vision, and tired eyes. Research also indicates that when used as part of a complete Ayurvedic treatment plan, Netra Tarpana can improve overall eye comfort, support eye nourishment, and help manage ocular pressure. Although large scientific studies remain limited, existing research and clinical experience indicate that Netra Tarpana is a safe, gentle, and non-surgical therapy that supports eye health in both long-term and functional conditions.
Netra Tarpana is a special Ayurvedic eye treatment where warm medicated ghee is used to gently bathe the eyes. It helps make your eyes healthy, strong, and fresh. This therapy is good for people who have dry eyes, tired eyes, blurry vision, or spend too much time on phones or computers.
A soft dough ring is made and placed around your eyes like a small wall. Then, warm ghee with special herbs is slowly poured into the ring so your eyes are fully covered. You will be asked to open, close, and gently move your eyes so the ghee can reach all parts. After some time, the ghee is taken out, and your eyes are cleaned with a soft cloth. You may be given a warm cloth on your eyes for comfort, and then you should rest your eyes—no screens or bright light for a few hours.
The ancient therapy of Netra Tarpan offers more than comfort—it nourishes, protects, and revitalizes your eyes from within.
With each session, your eyes not only found relief but also regained their natural brightness, strength, and clarity of vision.
