What is Greeva Basti?

Greeva Basti is a highly effective Ayurvedic therapeutic procedure for the neck and shoulders.

It has been successfully practised for centuries to relieve cervical spondylosis and reduce stiffness in the neck and shoulder muscles. Greeva Basti (Greeva is derived from the neck, and ‘basti’ means retaining or pooling the medicated oil) involves pouring the medicated herbal oil from this process into a specially constructed dough dam on the neck or shoulder region. The oil used in the procedure is applied to the depths of the tissues to nourish muscles, ligaments, and nerves, reducing pain and tension.

Ayurvedic perspective on Greeva Basti

The primary cause of neck-related issues like pain, stiffness, and limited movement is a Vata dosha imbalance. Dryness and discomfort in the cervical joints are caused by an increase in vata in the neck region (Greeva Pradesh). Greeva Sandhigata Vata, a kind of Vatavyadhi (Vata-related disorder), is the name given to this condition.

Ayurveda explains that spinal degeneration occurs due to a lack of lubrication and nourishment in the joints. Greeva Basti helps counter this by applying warm, medicated oil directly to the neck area, which pacifies aggravated Vata and supports joint health.

Scientific Mechanism & Clinical Evidence

Greeva Basti mainly uses localised heat therapy in conjunction with oil retention, as understood in contemporary medical practice. Warm oil helps ease tense muscles and lessen stiffness by improving blood circulation in the neck area.

Heat facilitates the elimination of inflammatory waste products from the afflicted area and increases tissue suppleness. Additionally, improved circulation supports the health of the surrounding structures and cervical discs. This localized heat treatment may reduce pain, inflammation, and muscle spasms frequently associated with cervical spondylosis, according to research and clinical observations.

Patients undergoing Greeva Basti often report relief from neck pain, shoulder pain, radiating arm pain, and tension-related headaches. Since the therapy is noninvasive and external, it is generally considered safe when performed under professional supervision.

How the Therapy Works

Greeva Basti involves encircling the neck region with a soft ring made of herbal dough.

This ring is filled with warm, medicated Ayurvedic oil and left in place for a predetermined period of time. Deeply penetrating the neck tissues, the oil’s warmth helps to lubricate dry joints, ease tense muscles, and increase flexibility. Heat (which promotes relaxation and circulation) and oil (which provides nourishment) work together to lessen neck pain, stiffness, and heaviness.

For those with long-term cervical issues, regular Greeva Basti sessions may improve neck mobility, reduce discomfort, and enhance quality of life.

Greeva Basti Procedure

Greeva Basti is a step-by-step process. Here, ‘Greeva’ means ‘neck’, and ‘Basti’ refers to the retention of oil in a specific location, typically achieved by building a wall of black gram flour.

The patient is made to lie on the table in a relaxed position. A leakproof flour dam, prepared from black gram flour, is applied around the neck. Oil is then poured into the neck area and kept warm at a therapeutic temperature. The oil is kept for 30–35 minutes so that it can penetrate deeply into muscles and joints. Mild stimulation of marmas can also be used at the end of the session, after draining the oil and removing the dough dam.
